A benches-clearing scrum led to suspensions in Major League Baseball Thursday.

MLB announced that Seattle Mariners left-handed reliever Gabe Speier and manager Dan Wilson have both been suspended after the league determined Speier intentionally beaned Detroit Tigers infielder Gleyber Torres during Wednesday’s game.

Speier was docked three games and fined an undisclosed amount, according to MLB. Wilson, however, was suspended one game and assessed an undisclosed fine.

The incident occurred in the top of the eighth inning during the Mariners’ 4-2 victory. With two outs and a 1-0 count to Torres, Speier was clearly targeting the right-handed hitter with his next pitch, and he succeeded by hitting him in the leg with a 96 mph fastball.

Why did Speier intentionally throw at Torres? It seemed to be retaliation for a hit-by-pitch in the previous frame.

Mariners star catcher Cal Raleigh was hit in the stomach area by Tigers reliever Enmanuel De Jesús on a wild pitch that didn’t seem intentional.

But, considering how much Raleigh means to the organization, Speier felt the need to retaliate in the following frame despite it still being a close game. After getting two outs, Speier threw his pitch, and an altercation ensued.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch was quick to jump out of his dugout, but that led to everyone from both sides hopping onto the field to congregate at home plate. However, there wasn’t much of a physical confrontation, and both teams stood around and exchanged verbal jousts, while umpires deliberated.

After their review, umpires tossed Speier from the game, which led Wilson to sprint out and plead his case on the matter. Umpires clearly didn’t like what Wilson had to say, and he was ejected from the game as well.

The Mariners held on to their lead until the final out, as closer André Muñoz shut the door in the ninth inning with a two-strikeout performance.

The Mariners and Tigers will complete their series in Seattle Thursday night, but the home team will be without its manager in the dugout. It will be up to bench coach Manny Acta to lead the way for the one-game suspension.

Speier’s suspension was also set to start on Thursday night, but he will appeal it. Until a final ruling is made by MLB, he is allowed to pitch in relief.
